Was The First Virtual Reality Presidential Debate A Success

xfhgfxLast night was the first debate for the 2016 Democratic presidential candidates, but it was also the first presidential debate in history that could be viewed in virtual reality. CNN teamed up with software company NextVR to broadcast the event live in a 360-degree virtual reality video accessible only to users of Samsung’s Gear VR headset, which is available now for $100 on the Samsung Store, and requires a Samsung Galaxy Note 4 smartphone as the viewer.

While it sounds great in theory to be standing on stage with the presidential hopefuls, several problems arose, the first of which is the weight of the Gear headset itself and the heat it produced.

Some found the experience was isolating; they missed the interactivity that comes with a dual-screen set up (watching the debate on one screen while following along on social media on another, usually a phone or computer).

Yet another issue is the lack of resolution in these set-ups. Mashable’s Jason Abbruzzese’s said it felt like “I’m sitting close but am also quite nearsighted

Telemedicine Enhancing Health Wearables

fjhgzsWhile wearable health tech is still in its early days, its popularity is growing and the general public is beginning to understand the benefits. And this bodes well for the continued growth of telemedicine.
To wit, a recent PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study, ‘Wearable Tech: Early Days,’ revealed that:
  • More than half the respondents think wearables could boost average life expectancy by 10 years because of the capability to monitor vital signs;
  • More than 40% see potential for nutrition/exercise monitoring to reduce obesity;
  • Two-thirds would wear a band if employers or insurance companies provided them for free and collected anonymous data from the device as an incentive to lower insurance premiums.
And a few other quick facts:
  • BBC Research and Towers Watson report that the global telemedicine market in 2016 will be about $27 billion, with virtual health services comprising about $16 billion of that amount;
  • Market research firm IDC predicts that by 2018, 65% of interactions with healthcare organizations will be done via mobile devices; and by 2018, 70% of them will have apps, offer wearables, and do remote health monitoring.

When the IoT Attacks Four Examples of the Highest Security Stakes We have Seen

djgtzhRemember the good old days? The days when a security breach just meant your credit card data was stolen from the local convenience store and used for a $2,000 propane tank shopping spree a couple thousand miles away?

It was innocent enough, really. No one was hurt — physically anyways. It’s a sad state of affairs that not being physically harmed is now the bar for a security breach being not-that-bad, but this scenario isn’t that far off from the truth. From cars being remotely controlled while driving to baby monitors falling prey to hackers, the Internet of Things (IoT) has raised the stakes of hacking from money lost…to matters of life or death.

Here are four scenarios of IoT technology breaking bad.

Baby, You Can Hack My Car

Our own Derek Brink, Vice President and Research Fellow, IT Security, alluded to the fact that at a previous “Def Con Hacking Conference in Las Vegas, Dr. Charlie Miller and Chris Valasek described and demonstrated their hacks of a recent model Toyota Prius and Ford Escape.”

Through these hacks, cybercriminals would gain direct access to functions

Primary Storage Shifts To The Cloud

Almost everyone believes that some primary storage is moving into the cloud, but there is disagreement on how much is acceptable after balancing accessibility and security issues against cost benefits. Many companies are planning a hybrid approach to the cloud where some computing and storage is in a public cloud and the rest, including much of their primary storage, is kept in-house in a private cloud.

Hybrid cloud reflects the conservativeness of the IT industry, exacerbated by concerns about retaining jobs and sustaining budgets. The latter issue isn’t a small matter, since the technologies swirling about on the near horizon, such as containers, fast direct-write bus-based 3D XPoint memory, and higher core densities seriously threaten to shrink the size of the server farm dramatically over the next five years or so.

SPONSOR VIDEO, MOUSEOVER FOR SOUND

However, hybrid clouds are just a stop-gap measure. The migration of storage — including primary storage — to the public cloud is inevitable.

Cloud economics are inexorable and the new technologies will be picked up avidly by the mega cloud service providers, leaving no hiding place from the cost question. Using public

Emerging Technologies in the Energy Industry

The energy industry is a vast and magical world. It involves old-school fuel like coal and diesel and new-school sources like solar and wind power. Energy sources like natural gas straddle the line, like Madonna. It’s been around forever, and we think we know everything about it, but then it reinvents itself and we’re intrigued once more. Natural gas, you crafty substance, you.

But the old-school technologies just aren’t going to cut it anymore, cost-wise or environment-wise. And the new-school technologies aren’t quite ready to power everything from our smartphones to our cars.

That’s where these 10 ideas come in. This list has it all: Farting microbes, pollution-reducing oxides that sound like terrible hairdos and even molten glass as a fuel storage medium. Molten glass! How cool is that, right? (Not at all cool. Just wait until you read how hot this stuff can get.)

So the old stuff gets a makeover, and the new stuff gets ready for prime time. And all of it is either here already, or on its way — shortly.

You’re smart, maybe even a bit geeky. You keep up with the latest technology; maybe even consider yourself an

We all know that customer satisfaction is one of the major concerns of a company, whether new or old. After all, it’s the customers where the company gets its business from. However, we should not forget that employees are as important as the clients. Richard Branson said, “Clients do not come first. Employees come first. If you take care of your employees, they will take care of the clients.” What most people fail to remember is that if you don’t have good employees by your side, you may end up losing your prestigious clients as well.

Companies may have a vision, multiple technologies, and clients, but what lacks is a good help. How do Servo Motors Work

A servo motor is employed in several things to regulate motion. Some places you would possibly have sub unit a servo is on a far off control model plane, automotive or boat. Servo are used on industrial equipment like CNC Lathes and edge Machines further as 3D Printers.
A servo motor is essentially a DC motor with a digital encoder connected. The encoder counts however so much the motor rotates. If the servo has done one revolution then the encoder has sent the right range of signals to the controller to let it recognize one revolution has been done.

Servo Controller
The controller is answerable for beginning and stopping the motor at the right range of rotations or half rotations. The controller can also control the voltage applied to the motor that controls the speed. A servo in a very remote control remote device toy can in all probability not have a voltage control, once a CNC shaping machine definitely can.

Steller Stories Wants To Bring Longform Storytelling To Social Media

Sometime after midnight in late August, Lake McDonald was a mirror for columns of light dancing across the distant peaks of Glacier National Park. “Looks like someone’s having a rock concert behind the mountains,” Ranger Jacob Frank commented, bent over his camera’s display. A visual information specialist with Glacier National Park, Frank beckoned us over to show the aurora borealis captured in a wash of chartreuse and purple.

We were half a dozen strangers in Glacier for a Stellermeet—a gathering of the photography-inclined sponsored by a startup called Steller Stories. Unlike Instagram, the popular image sharing app of the moment, Steller’s multimedia templates are taking the idea of longform to social media. Users create look-books by combining photos, videos, and text in tailored layouts.

The app has become popular among food bloggers, photojournalists, and even extreme athletes because of its sleek story design—actor Jared Leto is one of Steller’s early adopters, and recently published a viral story about climbing in Yosemite with legendary free-climber Alex Honnold. Major outdoor retailers Backcountry.com and Eddie Bauer are using Steller to narrate

Apple Unveils New iMac 4K and 5K Magic Trackpad 2 Magic Mouse 2 New Keyboard

Apple has updated its desktop iMac computer for 2015, and everything that comes with it. Along with the wireless keyboard and Magic Mouse, Apple’s Magic Trackpad—sold separately—gained new abilities today too.

Apple’s recent fall event was packed tight with new iPhones, iPads and even a stylus, but no new announcements regarding the traditional computer. While many computer users opt for the laptop nowadays, desktops still remain the machine of preference among professional users. Here are the changes iMac buyers can expect.

The New iMac

Some Apple prosumers have already been tempted by the sleek, black, trashcan-like Mac Pro unveiled last year. But for those looking for a cheaper desktop option now have the upgraded iMac. Cupertino has added an optional 4K display to the 21.5-inch model, and a 5K screen to every version of the 27-inch model. Apple has applied the name tag “Retina” to its 4K and 5K options, its marketing term meaning pixels can’t be seen from the user’s average viewing distance.

The iMac ships with a similar physical design to last year, that is, a slim, tapered monitor that contains all the computer’s guts, perched on

Facebook Is Testing A Video Feed To Compete Directly With YouTube

Facebook is continuing their push to make video a central part of the platform. Back in August, the company announced that public figures could share live video with fans and last month, it integrated 360-degree video.

VP of Product Management Will Cathcart announced today that Facebook has been testing several new video features for iPhones, including the ability to watch a Facebook video while scrolling through your newsfeed or messaging a friend, the option to save videos to watch later, and suggestions of additional videos to watch based on your viewing history.

The social network is also trying out a video-exclusive platform, which, according to the release, will include videos that Facebook users saved for later, and ones from friends, pages they follow, or other video publishers on Facebook. For now only “a small number of people” have access to the feature (it hasn’t been announced who those users are yet), but if you’re one of them, it can be accessed by tapping the “Videos” icon at the bottom of the Facebook iPhone app or in the left-hand menu under the “Favorites” section on the web.

In Japan Drones Guide Robot Trucks At Construction Sites

Japan’s Komatsu makes construction equipment, and has for almost a century. Construction vehicles are nothing without people to drive them–or at least they used to be. As either an alternative to rising labor costs or simply a solution when workers aren’t available, Komatsu now makes construction vehicles that can drive themselves. To get the most out of these self-driving machines, Komatsu recently paired with American dronemaker Skycatch with a plan to have drones survey and map construction sites, and then have unmanned bulldozers and other vehicles go to work.

First, drones fly over a construction site, taking pictures of the ground below. Software then stitches these pictures into 3D maps, and site planners add in the information about what earth they want moved, which areas they want left intact, and what the next stage of construction should look like. The machines then set about their tasks, working on the site under the watchful eye of a remote human controller/manager, instead of individual drivers. It’s an excellent use of drone mapping.

Komatsu and Skycatch are calling this “Smart Construction,” but it’s as much about replacing human workers as it is about machines getting smarter. Japan is currently

Building Your Own Computer 16 Steps for Powering on Your System for the First Time

At this point, you are ready to power on the system for the first time. To prepare for this, connect the following:

  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • Display
  • Power

Note that I did not include connecting a network cable. I usually recommend you do that after the OS has been installed, along with any service packs, and after you have ensured you are either behind a router or have the OS’s built-in firewall turned on.

Now that everything is connected, you can power up the system and run the BIOS Setup program. This enables you to configure the motherboard to access the installed devices and set the system date and time. The system POST (power-on self-test) also runs to determine whether any major problems exist. To run the BIOS Setup and configure the system, do the following:

    1. Power on the monitor first and then the system unit. Observe the operation via the screen and listen for any beeps from the system speaker.
    2. The system should automatically go through a POST consisting of video BIOS checking, a RAM test, and usually an installed component report. If a fatal error occurs during the POST, you might not see anything onscreen, and the system

Dont Let an Out of Date Corporate Network Lead to Disasters

Disasters can come in many shapes and sizes. At your local movie theater, big budget disaster flicks can include earthquakes, tsunamis, and even aliens and rampaging dinosaurs. But in the world of business technology, while disaster may seem more mundane and not come with expensive special effects, the costs of technology-related disasters can be very big budget as well.
For any organization whose technology infrastructure isn’t up to par, disasters are pretty much inevitable. And this is especially true for businesses whose networks are relying on out-of-date and easily overwhelmed technology.
Sometimes downtime is caused by real disasters such as hurricanes. And sometimes user error or poor planning can lead to IT infrastructure either going down or performing very poorly. But as emerging technologies continue to demand more and more from business networks, some organizations are finding that downtime and disasters are being caused by old-school network infrastructures that can’t meet the requirements of modern technology trends.
But no matter how a downtime event occurs, the cost will be high for the business experiencing it. Aberdeen research has shown that an hour of downtime can cost businesses an average
